Prepay Deferment Process
On December 16, 2024, late payment charges that were temporarily paused due to the impacts of Hurricane Helene will resume. To help you prepare, here’s what you need to know about the upcoming changes and how they may affect your payments.
Late Payment Fee Policy Resumes on December 16, 2024
Beginning on December 16, 2024, customers with an existing Deferred Balance exceeding $75 will incur a monthly late payment charge of 1.5% or $2 whichever is greater, of the outstanding Deferred Balance. To avoid late payment charges, you may request to pay down the existing Deferred Balance to stay within the $75 threshold before this date.
Negative Dollars will be Transferred to Deferred Balance on January 5, 2025
On January 5, 2025, Georgia Power will offer a one-time courtesy to transfer all accumulated negative “Dollars Remaining” into a "Deferred Balance”. This allows you to add funds for future service while paying down the deferred amount over time.
If you do not wish for this balance to be moved to deferred, please continue making payments to achieve a positive balance prior to this date.
Managing Your Deferred Balance
Once your Negative Dollars have been moved to Deferred:
- 25% of all future payments will be directed to reduce the Deferred Balance.
- If your Deferred Balance exceeds $75, a monthly late payment charge of 1.5% or $2 whichever is greater, of the outstanding Deferred Balance will be assessed on the total amount.
- You can request to pay the entire Deferred Balance in full at any time.
Understanding How Deferment Affects Your Payments
Example Scenario: If your average daily consumption is $4.30, a payment of $25.00 typically gives you approximately 5 days of service. With a deferred balance, 25% of your payment ($6.25) will go towards the deferred amount, and the remaining $18.75 will provide around 4 days of service.
